Lago Trasimeno

One of Umbria’s natural highlights is Lago Trasimeno, a tranquil lake located right in the heart of Italy.  On the north shore near the town of Tuoro, is the Campo del Sole (Field of the Sun), a sculpture garden containing a number of different columns designed by famous Italian artists.

There are three islands on the lake, Isola Minore, a privately owned island, Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese, something of a natural retreat.  We took the ferry over to Isola Polvese from the sleepy town of San Feliciano and enjoyed a very pleasant stroll around the island, although we were left a little disappointed with the Garden of Aquatic plants.

Nevertheless, nature came to our rescue when we heard some rustling coming from under a nearby tree and looked around to see two snakes coiled around each other – it didn’t take us long to figure out what was going on.  Subsequent research has shown these to be Western Whip snakes, who, while having a powerful and painful bite, are not venomous (had I know this earlier I might have tried to get a little closer).

Here are a few more pictures.
